Incident Reports

2005 Conviction of Lana Canen

Department Response

Legal Action

On February 22, 2016, Lana Canen filed a lawsuit, claiming Chapman withheld his lack of qualification to perform latent fingerprint analysis when he testified during her murder trial.[2][3]

The district court dismissed the case at summary judgment. It held that Detective Chapman was entitled to qualified immunity.[4]

Ms. Canen filed an appeal to the United States Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit.[4]

On January 27, 2017, the Circuit Court upheld the lower court's dismissal, stating that there was no violation of any clearly established right, and, accordingly, the doctrine of qualified immunity protected Chapman.[4]
