Overview

On June 22, 2016, Jefferson Parish Louisiana Sheriff's Office Detective David Michel Jr. saw a mysterious man who was following another man. When Michel tried to stop the suspect, a struggle followed and the suspect pulled a gun and shot the deputy three times, resulting in Michel's death. Jerman Neveaux was arrested later that day for the shooting of Michel.[1]

A cell-phone video shows the arrest[2], and Neveaux's mug shot shows several injuries.[3]

On June 23, 2016, Neveaux was charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault, resisting arrest by force or violence, and battery on a peace officer.[4]

On June 24, 2016, Neveaux was released from the hospital with lacerations and a broken bone.[3]

On October 16, 2016, Neveaux was indicted for first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, two counts of resisting arrest by force or violence, and one count of possession of a stolen firearm. The District Attorney said that they would seek the death penalty.[5]

On June 22, 2017, Neveaux filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against more than two dozen officers, alleging excessive force during his arrest that resulted in several injuries and partial blindness in one eye.[6]

On December 20, 2019, the Supreme Court of Louisiana found that the trial court should have disallowed Neveaux's confession.[7]
