2019 Death of Elijah McClain

After Jason Rosenblatt's unsuccessful attempt to use a carotid control hold, Woodyard performed the maneuver and rendered McClain briefly unconscious.[2]

Woodyard received the pictures that were taken in October 2019, but was not disciplined because he did not respond.[3]

Response Timeline

On June 13, 2020, Woodyard and Jason Rosenblatt were "moved off regular duty for their own protection" and are "now working in a non-enforcement capacity." Randy Roedema was reassigned on June 20, 2020.[4]

On September 1, 2021, Woodyard was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide as part of a 32-count indictment.[5][6][7]

In September 2021, Woodyard was placed on unpaid administrative leave.[8]

Woodyard pleaded not guilty.[9]

On November 6, 2023, Woodyard was found not guilty by a jury.[9]

On November 22, 2023, Woodyard received over $212,000 in back pay from when he was suspended.[10]

On November 28, 2023, Woodyard returned to work on restricted duty, where he will not be uniform nor have contact with the public.[8]

On January 12, 2024, Woodyard resigned.[1]

On January 19, 2024, the paid Woodyard over $217,000, covering the cost of one year of medical coverage, "backpay, accrued leave, and other consideration", and an agreement to not make any claims against the city.[10]
