114th Precinct Officer-Involved Shooting

On August 4, 2023, the New York City New York Police Department was called about a person acting violently with a knife. Officers Daniel Mehr, Daniel Mazza, Edward Britch, and Annie Virella-Abreu responded. On their way to locate Ben-Zitun, he emerged from an elevator and attempted to stab Britch. Ben-Zitun approached the other officers, prompting Mehr and Mazza to fire, striking Ben-Zitun.[1]

Ben-Zitun died at the hospital.[1]

The incident was captured on all of the officers' body-worn cameras and surveillance video.[1]

The state's Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation will investigate, as required by state law for deaths involving police action or inaction.[1]
