Casco Atdner (2017)
Overview
In October 2017, Jefferson Parish Louisiana Sheriff's Office Deputies George Kister and Julio Alvarado stopped Casco Atdner for running a red light. The deputies confiscated nearly $8,000 in cash that Atdner had just withdrawn from the bank. Some of the money was returned, and the deputies requested that Atdner sign a departmental form acknowledging the return of all his property. Atdner refused, at which point the deputies allegedly grabbed and beat Atdner. The deputies threated to, and eventually did, call Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("ICE").[1]
During his arrest, Atdner informed the deputies that he needed to pick up his daughter from school. The deputies took Atdner in handcuffs to the school, and informed the daughter that she would be placed with the Department of Children and Family Services.[1]
On December 29, 2017, Kister was fired after failing a polygraph examination given by the department in their internal investigation of the incident. The District Attorney’s Office said there was "insufficient evidence" to support criminal charges against Kister.[1]
October 10, 2018, Atdner filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court, claiming violations of his constitutional rights, theft of property, and unlawful arrest.[2]
On July 6, 2020, the complaint was amended to include Deputies Daniel Lassus and Blake Hollifield.[3][2]
On November 24, 2020, Atdner's lawsuit was settled for $50,000.[4][2]
