Overview

On September 22, 2022, Kern claimed that Cleveland Heights Ohio Police Department Officer Carley Lewis almost hit his car as she attempted to stop another vehicle. Kern stopped to discuss it with Lewis, and waited while she finished with the other vehicle.[1][2]

Sergeant Naftali Wolf arrived and joined the conversation. Lewis asked to see identification, and Kern refused. Both officers claimed that Kern was required to identify himself. Kern was handcuffed by Wolf and arrested for obstruction of official business.[1]

As Lewis was writing Kern a ticket, she apologized and said that she was following orders. Kern challenged her to intervene.[1]

The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.[3]

On September 22, 2022, Kern filed a complaint with the department against the sergeant.[4]

The department investigated and ordered Wolf to attend additional de-escalation training.[3]

On October 3, 2022, the prosecutor dropped the charge against Kern.[3]

On July 7, 2023, Kern filed a lawsuit against the department and the officers, alleging a racial bias and violation of Kern's constitutional rights.[5]
