Overview

Witness video

On June 25, 2022, Newport Rhode Island Police Department Officer John Sullivan saw Engleson throw a silicone bar mat at pedestrians several times. Sullivan told Engleson to leave. When Engleson refused and picked up the mat, Sullivan tried to arrest him for disorderly conduct. Engleson did not cooperate, and Sullivan called for additional officers. Officer Neil Sullivan and Detective Patrick Walsh responded.[1]

Witness video shows that Walsh shoved one man from the crowd into a light pole. Another man, Christopher Adams, surprised Walsh, who struck him in the face before taking him to the ground and handcuffing him.[2][3][4]

The incident was captured on a witness's cell phone.[2]

Engleson was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Adams was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest.[3]

On July 6, 2022, Engleson and Adams pleaded not guilty.[5]

On October 5, 2022, the District Attorney announced that a grand jury did not indict Walsh.[6]

In December 2022, the charges against Engleson and Adams were dropped.[3]

On October 30, 2023, Adams sued the city, the department, Walsh, and other officers for using excessive force, falsely arresting and imprisoning him, assault and battery, and defamation.[7]
