Rajan Moonesinghe (2022)
Overview
On November 15, 2022, Austin Texas Police Department Officer Daniel Sanchez responded to a report of a man who was pointing a gun down the street and had fired inside his own house. When Sanchez arrived, Moonesinghe was on his porch, armed with a rifle. Sanchez ordered Moonesinghe to drop the gun and immediately fired several rounds, striking Moonesinghe. Officers Stephen Markert and Luis Brito arrived and assisted in rendering aid until EMTs arrived. Moonesinghe died at the hospital.[1]
Sanchez was placed on administrative leave.[1]
On December 1, 2022, the department released body-worn camera video from the officers involved, and video from a doorbell camera.[2]
On December 19, 2023, a special grand jury indicted Sanchez with felony deadly conduct.[3]
On November 12, 2024, Moonesinghe's family sued the city, Sanchez, Markert, and Brito.[4]
