Overview

On January 11, 2020, Miami Beach Florida Police Department officers Yamil Acevedo, Richard Castillo, and Kevin Perez responded to a report of a man with a knife. Ryan Simms had drawn the knife in a restaurant, but left without further incident. When police located Simms, he was non-compliant and they used a Taser on him. While attempting to secure him, Simms was able to attack Castillo, at which point Acevedo and Perez fired their weapons. Simms died the next day.

According to the State Attorney's report, the incident was captured by multiple officers' body worn cameras.[1]

On May 11, 2021, the State Attorney ruled that the shooting was "legally justified".[2]
