Body-worn and in-car camera video from officer-involved death on 4/17/24

On April 17, 2024, officers with the Michigan State Police (MSP) Fugitive Team, Kentwood Michigan Police Department, Wyoming Michigan Police Department, Grand Rapids Michigan Police Department, Michigan Department of Corrections, and the United States Marshals Service were looking for Sterling, who was wanted on multiple warrants after violating his probation on a felony conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Officers located Sterling at a gas station. Sterling fled on foot, followed by officers on foot and another officer in a vehicle. Sterling was struck by the vehicle.[1][2][3]

Sterling died at the hospital.[3]

Parts of the incident were captured on three officer's body-worn cameras, an in-vehicle camera, and surveillance video.[4][2]

The Michigan State Police union contract prohibits the naming of officers unless they are charged with a crime.[4]

The unnamed officer was suspended.[3]

The Fifth District Investigative Response Team opened an investigation.[3]

On April 25, 2024, the Michigan Attorney General announced they would be reviewing the investigation.[5]

On May 10, 2024, the Michigan State Police completed their investigations and sent their report to the Attorney General.[4]

On May 28, 2024, MSP Detective Sergeant Brian Keely was charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Keely faces up to life in prison for the murder charge.[6]

On June 4, 2024, Keely retired.[7]
