Overview

On October 22, 2023, Wood argued with his father, who refused him access to guns inside a safe. After Wood pushed his father to the ground, the father called police and reported that Wood was having a "psychotic event" and a "reality issue". Wood got two knives from the kitchen and stabbed himself in the leg. Wood's father attempted to help, but Wood chased him into the front yard.[1]

Lafayette Colorado Police Department Corporal Leonard Fazio and Officer Houston Lair arrived and saw Wood chasing his father with the knives. Officers ordered Wood to drop the knives. Wood reached his father and slashed him several times. The officers fired, striking Wood. After he fell, Wood started stabbing himself with a knife. Lair used his Taser to control Wood.[1]

Officers rendered aid to Wood and his father until paramedics arrived.[2]

The incident was captured on home surveillance cameras and the officers' body-worn cameras.[1]

The state District Attorney's Critical Incident Team opened an investigation.[1]

On December 7, 2023, the District Attorney released the results of their investigation, finding that the officers or the father were "in imminent danger of being killed or seriously injured" and the force used "was both reasonable and appropriate".[1]
