Tyron McAlpin (2024)
Overview
On August 19, 2024, Phoenix Arizona Police Department officers Benjamin Harris and Kyle Sue responded to a call about a man who was loitering.[1] The man claimed that he had been assaulted and his cell phone had been stolen, and identified McAlpin as the suspect. Later reporting described the call as a fight over the attempted theft of a bicycle.[2] As McAlpin was walking through a parking lot, Harris pulled his vehicle in McAlpin's path. McAlpin turned to walk around the vehicle. Harris exited the vehicle and punched McAlpin several times. Sue joined the struggle and tased McAlpin multiple times. [1]
The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras and surveillance video.[1]
McAlpin was charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault, one count of felony resisting arrest, and misdemeanor theft.[1][2]
In Harris' report, he claimed that McAlpin swung at him.[1]
On August 30, 2024, the agency opened an investigation.[3]
The Maricopa County Attorney opened an investigation.[2]
In September 2024, the theft charge was dismissed.[2]
In October 2024, the body-worn camera video was released.[3]
On October 17, 2024, the Maricopa County Attorney dismissed the remaining charges against McAlpin.[2]
