On March 28, 2022, Michigan State Police troopers Bram Schroeder and Zachary Tebedo stopped Martin on suspicion of drunk driving after he had been speeding and ran two stop signs. Saginaw Michigan Police Department officers Jordan Engelhart and Dominic Vasquez responded in support. Troopers handcuffed Martin, who resisted sitting in the back of a police car.[1]

Schroeder punched Martin in the face to gain compliance. An ambulance was called, and Martin refused medical attention.[1]

Officers tried again to get Martin to sit in the police car, but he continued to resist. Schroeder punched Martin four more times.[1]

The incident was captured on Vasquez's body-worn camera and a witness's cell phone.

On March 29, 2022, Schroeder was suspended pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.[2]

On August 23, 2022, Tebedo was suspended pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.[2]

The Michigan Professional Standards Section investigated.[1]

The Saginaw Police Department's internal investigation found no violations of policy or procedure by Engelhart and Vasquez.[2]

The Saginaw County prosecutor's office sent their report to the Attorney General's office.[1]

On August 31, 2022, the Attorney General charged Schroeder with felony misconduct in office and misdemeanor aggravated assault. Schroeder faces up to five years in custody for the misconduct and one year for the assault. Engelhart, Vasquez, and Tebedo were charged with misdemeanor willful neglect of duty for not intervening, and face up to one year in custody.[1][3]
