2024 Shooting of Ranses Vargas
On February 10, 2024, Berg responded to a report of shots fired. Berg was unable to locate the shooter, and detained someone unrelated to the shooting. Berg heard additional shots and approached Vargas, who was armed with a handgun. Vargas refused Berg's commands and walked away. As Vargas got close to a parked car, Berg fired several times and continued firing as Vargas disappeared behind the vehicle. Vargas and the occupant of the parked car were struck by Berg's gunfire.[2]
The incident was captured on Berg's body-worn camera.

The agency opened an internal investigation, "to focus on departmental policy compliance".[4]
On May 13, 2024, the Wake County District Attorney's Office announced that the use of force was justified and no criminal charges would be filed.[2]
