Overview

On July 17, 2019, Jefferson Parish Louisiana Sheriff's Office Sergeant Wayne Rumore, Sergeant Julio Alvarado, Detective Kurt Keagler, Detective Donald Clogher, Deputy Braedon Cohen, Deputy Nicholas Broussard were dispatched to take Brooks into custody on a warrant regarding a shooting earlier in July. Officers claim that Brooks was reaching for a gun, and they shot him. Brooks died from his injuries.[1]

On July 16, 2020, Brooks' family filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court, citing violations of the Fourth, Fifth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments, and state laws.[2]

On September 24, 2020, the case was dismissed. Jefferson Parish had requested that the case be dismissed, and Brooks' family did not file a timely objection, even though they were represented by counsel. [3]

At the time of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office did not use body cameras.[4]
