Incident Reports

2021 Deaths of Nicholas Harris and Leah Foster

On May 27, 2021, Smith was off-duty and driving "at a high rate of speed" when he hit another vehicle, killing Harris and Foster.[2]

Response Timeline

The investigation found that Smith had been driving 105 mph. before the crash.[4]

On March 25, 2022, Smith was indicted for felony negligent manslaughter and misdemeanor negligent driving.[1]

In 2022, Smith was placed on administrative leave.[2]

On January 31, 2023, Smith pleaded guilty to two charges of negligent manslaughter.[2]

On March 24, 2023, Smith was sentenced to 18 months in jail.[4]
