Commendations

2012 Valor Award

On July 12, 2011, Seltzner and other deputies responded to a call of shots fired at a hotel. The shooter advanced towards and fired at the officers, who returned fire. The deputies administered aid to the shooter, who survived his injuries.[2]

On April 25, 2012, the deputies were given Valor Awards.[2]

2017 Life Saving Award

In 2017, Seltzner and other deputies received the Life Saving Award.[3]

2018 Exceptional Service Award

In April 2017, investigators from the Middleton Police Department and Dane County Sheriff's Office located and apprehended a homicide suspect.[4]

In 2018, Seltzner and other officers received the Exceptional Service Award from the Middleton Police Department.[4]

2019 Special Teams Response Award

On June 7, 2019, Seltzner and other deputies received a Special Teams Response Award following an incident with "an armed and barricaded homicide suspect".[5]

Incident Reports

2022 Death of Carlos Jimenez

On October 23, 2022, police received a report that Jimenez had threatened a woman with a gun earlier in the day. Seltzner encountered Jimenez, who was carrying "a gold and silver colored cylinder or tubular object... which [Seltzner] believed was a gun". Jimenez raised the object up, prompting Seltzner to fire on Jimenez.[6]

Officers rendered aid. Jimenez died at the scene.[7]

A handgun was found near Jimenez's body.[6]

Response Timeline

Seltzner was placed on administrative leave.[7]

An investigation will be conducted by an independent agency, which is required under state law for incidents where a person dies during an encounter with a police officer. The state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) opened an investigation.[7]

On February 3, 2023, the District Attorney announced that they would not file charges against Seltzner.[6]
