News report with body-worn camera video

On April 16, 2023, the Tulare California Police Department was called about a man with a knife.[1]

Officers Daniel Bradley and Adan Barragan found Villegas, who ignored commands and ran from the officers. Bradley fired, hitting Villegas.[2]

Bradley notified police dispatch that Villegas had "turned and was charging at us", which is refuted by body-worn camera video.[3]

Officers rendered medical aid. Villegas died.[2]

The incident was captured on body-worn camera.[2]

The officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.[2]

The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[4]

Villegas' family filed a claim against the city, which is often a precursor to a lawsuit.[2]
