2019 Death of Gregory Griffin
On January 28, 2019, Griffin was pulled over for speeding. Griffin did not follow the officer's instructions to turn off the vehicle or put his hands on the steering wheel. After a gun was seen in his car, Griffin fled. Crespo responded as a backup officer.[3][1][4]
Crespo shot at Griffin's vehicle at multiple locations, ultimately striking Griffin in the head.[1]
On January 29, 2019, Griffin died.[3]
The incident was captured on body-worn and in-vehicle cameras.[4]
Response Timeline
On May 21, 2019, Crespo was indicted by a grand jury on six counts, including aggravated manslaughter. Crespo faces life in prison.[3]
On July 5, 2023, a jury found Crespo guilty of aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, and official misconduct. Crespo faces up to 30 years in prison.[1]
On July 5, 2023, Crespo was fired.[1]
On May 31, 2024 Crespo was sentenced to 27 years in prison.[5]
