Kyle Dail (2022)
Overview
On July 27, 2022, an undercover officer with the Dallas Texas Police Department claimed to see Dail participate in a drug deal in the parking lot of a convenience store. Dail got in a car and drove away, and evaded police officers when they tried to stop him. Dail returned to the convenience store, where uniformed officers Thomas Hoffman, Noah Hemm, and Michael Piering rushed him from behind. Dail struggled and drew a gun. Dail threw the gun away shortly before Hoffman shot him. Dail died at the hospital.[1][2]
The incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras and the store's surveillance camera.[2]
Hoffman was placed on restricted duty.[2]
In February 2023, Dail's family filed a lawsuit against the city, the department, and the officers, claiming their "excessive and illegal use of force" was a violation of Dail's civil rights.[2][3]
The department investigated and forwarded their findings to the District Attorney's office.[2]
On December 15, 2023, a judge dismissed most claims in the family's civil lawsuit.[3]
