Overview

On January 11, 2023, San Bernardino County California Sheriff's Department deputies Aimee Coakley and Tyler Gilbert were dispatched to a report of a man who was attempting to break into a home and was shouting obscenities at the lone female occupant.[1]

The deputies encountered Arredondo, who had broken a window and was attempting to enter the home. The deputies, believing that Arredondo pointed a weapon at them, shot him.[1]

Arredondo died at the hospital.[1]

No weapons were found in a search of the area.[1]

The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[2]

LEO Ratings has filed a request with the Sheriff's Office for copies of the officers' reports, their personnel records, and any internal investigative reports for this incident. The Sheriff's Office is delaying the release of these documents to us, claiming that it would "reasonably be expected to interfere with a criminal enforcement" (May 31, 2023).
