2021 Death of John Montez

On March 26, 2021, Ramos responded to a call from Montez's common-law wife that he was outside of the house, armed with a knife, had struck her, and was threatening to kill himself. During the 911 call, Montez entered the house, and shouts of "NO", "STOP IT", and "GET OUT" were heard.[2]

Ramos arrived, located Montez in a rear doorway, and ordered him to drop the knife. Montez ignored the order, re-entered the house, and closed the door. Ramos kicked open the door and repeated his commands, which Montez ignored. Ramos instructed Officer Meynig to draw his Taser, which he deployed at too close of a distance to be effective. Montez closed the door on the officers.[2]

Officers kicked the door in again and Meynig deployed his Taser, which was was not fully effective. Montez yelled at the officers and advanced on Ramos with the knife. Ramos fired, striking Montez.[2]

Paramedics arrived and declared Montez to be dead.[2]

The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.[2]
