2021 Wire Fraud
A local news channel performed a detailed investigation into the timesheets and activities of Morrell and other officers.[3]
From 2018 to 2021, records show at least 18 occasions when Morrell was on duty but also participating in car races at the local track.[3][4]
On October 11 and 12, 2021, records show that Morrell was being paid to work both general duty shifts and off-duty detail shifts at the same time.[3]
On October 23, 2021, Morrell was filmed at his home while performing personal errands during hours when he was being paid to be on detail patrol at a nearby fairgrounds.[3]
On November 29, 2021, Morrell retired.[2]
Response Timeline
The department suspended Morrell from doing detail assignments, but he remained on active duty.[3]
The Public Integrity Bureau opened a disciplinary investigation. The Office of Independent Police Monitor, which investigates complaints involving off-duty police details, also is investigating.[5]
On January 11, 2024, Morrell was indicted on 12 federal counts of wire fraud. Morrell faces up to 20 years in prison.[6]
On January 26, 2024, Morrell pleaded not guilty.[7]
