Incident Reports
2020 Detainment of Jayden Wyant
On August 6, 2020, Simmons and another officer approached a group of teenagers in a park and asked about their possible involvement in a fight. The group denied any involvement. Wyant and Simmons argued about her rights to not speak to the officers. Simmons grabbed Wyant "in a rude and aggressive manner" and took her to his police car before dismissing her.[1]
Part of the incident was recorded on a witness's cell phone.[4]
Response Timeline
Simmons was placed on administrative leave.[5]
On August 10, 2022, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was asked to lead the investigation.[5]
Simmons participated in a "pre-trial diversion" program.[1]
The Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (POST) scheduled and rescheduled a meeting with Simmons to determine whether he could keep his certification; Simmons did not appear for any of the scheduled interviews.[1]
On May 8, 2023, the POST commission revoked Simmons' law enforcement certification for criminal conduct, unprofessional conduct, failure to cooperate in the investigation, and a lack of good moral character.[1]
