On December 18, 2019, the Department announced on social media that Varner had received a Letter of Commendation for his "initiative and professionalism", noting that he led the department in arrests for 2019. In December 2021, the Department's posting was not publically available, but was viewed through a cache.

2020 Officer of the Year

In January 2021, Varner was selected by his peers as the Department's Officer of the Year for 2020.[3]

2021 Inappropriate Contact with a Minor

During an investigation, Varner admitted to inappropriate contact with a female who claimed to be 18 but was actually underage.[1]

Response Timeline

Varner was placed on paid administrative leave.[1]

On October 20, 2021, the Benton County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into the incident, which did not result in criminal charges.[1]

On October 21, 2021, the Pea Ridge Police Department notified Varner that he was under investigation.[1]

The Department determined that Varner's actions were "Unbecoming Conduct" and he was fired after the city "lost confidence in [him] as an employee".[1]
