Response Timeline

On July 26, 2021, Perez was relieved of duty, with pay.[1]

On August 2, 2021, the Miami-Dade State Attorney announced first-degree misdemeanor battery charges against the five officers involved.[3]

On September 9, 2021, the five officers were arraigned and charged with misdemeanor battery.[4]

On September 23, 2021, it was announced that charges against Sergeant Perez and Officer Perez will be upgraded to third-degree felony battery.[5][6]

On March 7, 2023, a judge reduced the charges against Officer Perez from felony battery to simple battery. The prior charge of felony battery requires great bodily harm including permanent disfigurement, which the judge felt was not applicable in this case. Perez now faces no more than a year in prison if convicted.[7]

On March 8, 2023, a jury found Perez guilty of simple battery.[8]

On March 26, 2023, Perez was scheduled to be sentenced, but the judge granted a motion for a retrial because charges had been dropped against Crudup.[9]

On March 21, 2024, Crudup filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the officers and the city for battery, malicious prosecution, excessive force, and other charges.[10]
