On July 14, 2018, Chicago Illinois Police Department officers saw Augustus walking and noticed "the outline of a handgun visible under his shirt". Officer Megan Fleming attempted to detain Augustus, who pulled away and ran into the street. Officers claimed that Augustus reached for his handgun, prompting Office Dillan Halley to shoot him.[1]

Augustus was pronounced dead at the hospital.[1]

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras and an in-vehicle camera.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) opened an investigation.

On March 2, 2021, COPA sent the recommendations from their investigation to the department.[2] COPA found that the officers lacked justification to stop Augustus, but the use of deadly force was consistent with the department's policy.[3]

On July 14, 2021, Halley was suspended for 2 days and ordered to be retrained on concealed carry investigatory stops.[3]

On July 14, 2021, Fleming was suspended for 60 days for stopping Augustus without justification and violating several department policies.[4]

On July 14, 2021, Lieutenant Davina Ward was suspended for 30 days for not separating Halley and Fleming after the shooting.[4]

Augustus' family filed a civil lawsuit.[5]

On July 7, 2023, a jury in the civil case found Halley not liable for Augustus' death.[5]
