Overview

On January 8, 2020, Adams was suspected in the murder of his mother, who had been shot and partially dismembered. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) was tracking the location of Adams' cell phone. CHP Officer David Mellon located Adams' vehicle, which was parked on a freeway's shoulder. Mellon waited approximately 3/4 of a mile from Adams, and was joined by San Bernardino County California Sheriff's Department Deputy Anthony Buscemi, CHP Sergeant Daniel Paxton and officers Robert Murphy and Marcus Guirguis, Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) Sergeant Shawn Eckert and Trooper Jared Ramm, and Las Vegas Nevada Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Officer Raymond Kent.[1]

Adams' vehicle started moving down the shoulder, and the officers decided to perform a traffic stop. As they approached, Adams stopped, with the officers' vehicles approximately 60 yards behind. Adams exited the vehicle, ignored commands to surrender, retrieved a firearm from the vehicle, shot at officers, and entered the vehicle.[1]

Buscemi, Mellon, and Ramm returned fire on the vehicle. After shooting, the officers waited for air support to report on Adams' condition and for the arrival of a ballistic shield before approaching the vehicle. Adams had been shot multiple times, including a self-inflicted wound to the head.[1]

Adams was pronounced dead at the scene.[1]

The incident was captured on NHP and LVMPD officers' body-worn cameras, CHP in-vehicle cameras, and audio recorders.[1]

On November 9, 2023, the county District Attorney concluded that the use of force "was exercised in self-defense", was reasonable and justifiable, and that no criminal charges would be filed.[1]
