Incident Reports
2021 DWI
On April 21, 2021, Coates was stopped by a Deputy from another agency because he was swerving on the road. Coates told the Deputy he was tired from working overnight and had been on the phone. Coates told the Deputy that he worked for the Sheriff's Office. The Deputy let Coates leave without a citation.[1][3]
A news report includes body-worn camera footage from the traffic stop.[3]
About 2 hours later, Coates ran a stop sign and t-boned an 18-wheeler. Coates was seriously injured and was flown to the hospital for treatment. Officers obtained a subpoena to draw Coates' blood, which showed a blood alcohol content of 0.14 – nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08.[1]
After his termination from the Sheriff's Office, Coates was hired as police officer for the City of Mathis Texas. The Mathis Police Chief approved the hire as Coates had been honorably discharged from the Sheriff's Office.[1]
Department Response
Coates was placed on leave after the accident.[1]
Coates applied for reinstatement but was denied.[1]
On May 19, 2021, Coates was terminated for violations including his blood alcohol level, arrest warrant, and failure to maintain insurance.[1][3]
Legal Action
On July 1, 2021, the County Attorney stated that they were not taking action on the case, later telling the media that the case "will receive action before the statute of limitations runs out in two years."[1]
The driver of the other vehicle filed a lawsuit against Coates for damages.[3]
