2019 Assault of Prisoner

In October 2019, Wong and other officers took several people to a police station for arrest processing. As Wong and two other officers put a handcuffed man into a holding cell, the man kicked the door and began to spit at them. Wong entered the cell and punched the man in the face.^[1]

2020 Assault of Prisoner

In April 2020, an officer under Wong's supervision arrested a man in the subway who had punched another passenger. As the man was being led from the station, he yelled obscenities and anti-Asian slurs at Wong, and kicked him in the leg. Wong and another officer pushed the handcuffed man to the ground. Wong knelt on the man's back. The man continued to taunt Wong, and then shouted, "I can't breathe."^[1]

Wong is quoted as saying he did not care "if you can breathe or not" before punching the man in the face.^[1]

Response Timeline

On July 22, 2021, Wong was charged with third-degree assault and third-degree attempted assault, and pleaded not guilty.^[1]^[3]

On March 2, 2022, Wong pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault charges and was sentenced to two years' probation, 70 hours of community service, and was ordered to undergo anger management or other counseling.^[1]

On August 18, 2022, the state Division of Criminal Justice Services decertified Wong following a hearing.^[4]^[5]
