Overview

On December 16, 2023, McGill fired a gun into the air. After several Charlotte-Mecklenburg North Carolina Police Department officers arrived, McGill pointed the gun at his brother. Officers Benjamin DeVries, Sean Werchek, Tymel Carson, and James Fisher shot, striking McGill.[1]

McGill died at the scene.[1]

The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.[1]

The State Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation.[1]

On July 30, 2024, the Mecklenburg District Attorney ruled that the officers were "entirely reasonable" in believing McGill posed an "imminent threat of great bodily harm or death to his brother" and no criminal charges would be filed.[1]
