2017 Arrest of Bryce Yakish

Video shows Iowa trooper striking motorcyclist during stop

On September 25, 2017, Smith pulled Yakish over for speeding on a motorcycle. After Yakish stopped, Smith approached Yakish with his gun drawn and struck Yakish, knocking him backward. Smith put his knee on Yakish's neck while handcuffing him.[2]

Yakish was charged with eluding law enforcement.[2]

The incident was captured on dash-cam video, which was released in 2019.[2][5]

In 2018, Smith resigned from the Iowa State Patrol.[2]

In 2019, the Cedar County Iowa Sheriff declared that Smith could not book any suspects into jail due to a lack of faith in his credibility.[2]

In July 2019, Smith was placed on administrative leave by the Durant Iowa Police Department.[4]

On September 26, 2022, Smith pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights under color of law. Smith faces up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.[2]
