2021 Purple Heart and Medal of Merit
Gist received a Purple Heart and Medal of Merit for his actions during a domestic violence incident. Gist was also nominated and approved to receive a Medal of Valor, but he was terminated before he received the award.[5]
Incident Reports
2020 Death of John Coleman
On May 28, 2020, Coleman's wife called police to report that Coleman had beaten her and threatened to murder her. Two Ogden Utah Police Department officers responded, as did Gist and another Corrections officer. Coleman shot and killed Odgen Officer Nathan Lyday, and shot Gist as he pulled Lyday from the scene. Officers returned fire, killing Coleman.[6]
The incident was captured by body-worn cameras.[5]

2020 Social Media Comments
An investigation by the Utah Department of Corrections found that Gist had made social media posts that were insulting to Muslims, Latinos, and Native Americans. Gist also wrote that he "just wanted to punch" people who didn't support President Donald Trump. The postings were made from 2016 through 2020.[2][5]
Response Timeline
In October 2020, the director of Utah Adult Probation and Parole (part of the Utah Department of Corrections) gave Gist notice that he would be fired.[2]
In December 2020, Gist was formally terminated.[2]
2021 Service Comments
On September 28, 2021, Moab City Utah Police Department Officer Gist used the police radio channel to discuss that he was no longer working with the department. He used vulgarities in reference to the town's assistant police chief.[2]
2020-2023 Stalking
From November 2020 to March 24, 2023, Gist sent threatening messages to his former boss, including "Don't you wish it was OK to kill humans".[7]
Response Timeline
In April 2023, the former boss filed for a stalking injunction against Gist.[7]
In June 2023, Gist was charged with misdemeanor stalking.[7]
