In February 2018, Stickels and other officers received a Unit Commendation for their response to a shooting incident.[4]

2019 Death of Harvey Cantrell

Body-worn camera footage

On December 24, 2019, officers including Stickels and Deputies Michael Sawicki and Jacob Bissonnette responded to a family disturbance. Deputies surrounded the house for 23 about minutes. Cantrell's sister came out of the house toward the officers and was shot by Cantrell. Stickels, Sawicki, and Bissonnette fired, striking Cantrell.[5][6]

Officers rendered aid to the sister. Cantrell died.[5]

The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.

Response Timeline

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement opened an investigation.[5]

The officers were placed on paid administrative leave.[6]

On July 6, 2026, Stickels was off-duty at a bar when he approached a couple and tried to kiss the woman. The husband pushed Stickels away. Another patron put Stickels in a choke hold and took him to the ground.[2]

Stickels was arrested and charged with two counts of felony battery on a person 65 or older.[2]

The incident was captured on surveillance video.[2]

Response Timeline

Stickels was placed on administrative leave.[2]

On July 7, 2026, Stickels resigned.[2]
