Incident Reports
2026 Death of Corey Ruiz
On July 22, 2026, officers responded to calls about someone who was checking out parked cars and a possible attempted burglary.[3] Officers located Ruiz, who fled on a bicycle.[4]
Four officers later stopped Ruiz, leading to a physical altercation.[4] Two officers attempted to use a Taser, but it was ineffective. Ruiz "brandished a knife and injured" Baitinger-Peterson.[3] Baitinger-Peterson shot Ruiz.[4]
Ruiz was pronounced dead at the hospital.[4]
The agency does not equip its officers with body-worn cameras. The incident was captured on several witnesses' cell phone cameras.[3]
Response Timeline
The four responding officers were put on paid administrative leave.[3]
The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation opened an investigation. After the investigation, the Dane County District Attorney will decide whether to file charges.[3]
