Incident Reports
2023 Death of Jaime Valdez
On November 11, 2023, police were called about a man making threats to his family members.[5] Yanez arrived to find Valdez unconscious in the driveway. Valdez woke and spoke with Yanez, who tried to handcuff him. Valdez resisted. Yanez deployed his Taser, which was ineffective. During the struggle, Valdez took the Taser before Yanez shot him.[6]
Officers rendered aid.[6] Paramedics pronounced Valdez dead at the scene.[5]
The incident was captured on Yanez's body-worn camera.[6]
Response Timeline
The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[7]
In April 2025, Valdez's family filed a lawsuit against the agency, claiming the use of excessive force.[8]
