Overview

On April 4, 2017, Jefferson Parish Louisiana Sheriff's Office Deputies George Kister and Derek Adams were conducting a surveillance operation at a gas station and approached Jackson's vehicle. Jackson claims that the deputies did not identify themselves. When Jackson attempted to leave, the deputies claimed to see weapons and shot at the vehicle with both a pistol and a patrol rifle.[1]

Jackson was hit four times, and crashed into a drainage canal when he lost consciousness. Police recovered a handgun that they believe was thrown from the vehicle.[1]

Jackson was taken to a local hospital and later charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer with a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, aggravated assault of a police officer with a motor vehicle, possession of alprazolam, possession of tramadol, and possession of drug paraphernalia.[1]

An internal investigation by the Sheriff’s Office cleared the officers of any wrongdoing.[2]

On April 4, 2018, Jackson filed a lawsuit against the officers, alleging excessive and unnecessary force that resulted in permanent injuries.[1]

In 2018, Jackson's passenger, Lance Stevens, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a police officer with a firearm and one count of obstruction of justice and was given a five-year suspended sentence. A second count of assaulting an officer was dropped, as were four drug charges.[3]

On May 20, 2019, Jackson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault and various drug charges. Jackson was sentenced to seven years in prison.[3]
