On March 4, 2015, Hirales and other officers helped save a man from a burning house.[2]

On May 8, 2015, Hirales and other officers were presented a 9-1-1 Lifesavers Award by the Red Cross.[3]

2023 Death of Elizandro Vargas

Critical Incident Community Briefing

On August 31, 2023, officers responded to a theft at a business. Officers located Vargas, who was holding a brick. Hirales ordered Vargas to stop and drop the brick. Vargas threw the brick toward Hirales. Hirales fired, striking Vargas.[4]

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Vargas died at the hospital.[4]

The incident was captured on surveillance video, body-worn cameras, and in-vehicle cameras.

Response Timeline

The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[5]
