July 26, 2021, Chief Clements relieved Rivas of duty (with pay).[1]
On August 2, 2021, the Miami-Dade State Attorney announced first-degree misdemeanor battery charges against the five officers involved.[2]
On September 9, 2021, the five officers were arraigned and charged with misdemeanor battery.[3]
On May 25, 2023, the charge against Rivas was dropped due to a lack of evidence and jurisdiction. The state attorney's office announced plans to appeal.[4]
