2024 Death of Roger Fortson

On May 3, 2024, Duran responded to a domestic disturbance call and knocked on Fortson's door several times. Fortson answered the door while carrying a handgun that was pointed at the ground. Duran fired, striking Fortson.[2]

Officers rendered aid.[1] Fortson died.[2]

The incident was captured on Duran's body-worn camera.[2]

Response Timeline

The agency opened a criminal and administrative internal affairs investigations.[1]

The criminal investigation was turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.[1]

On May 30, 2024, the agency concluded their administrative investigation, determining that the "use of deadly force was not objectively reasonable"[1]

On May 31, 2024, Duran was fired.[2]

On August 23, 2024, Duran was charged with manslaughter with a firearm. Duran faces up to 30 years in prison.[2]
