2021 Assault of Jail Inmate

On April 1, 2021, Ortiz was working at the sheriff's jail. An inmate refused to move back from the cell door, and Ortiz poured hot water on his hands.[1]

Two other deputies were involved at the beginning of the encounter, but it is not clear if they witnessed the assault.[3] We have reached out to the Sheriff's Office for clarification.

The inmate suffered first- and second-degree burns but wasn't treated for over six hours until another deputy noticed that his arm was "red and peeling".[1]

Response Timeline

On December 10, 2021, Ortiz was fired.[1]

On December 13, 2021, Ortiz was charged with felony counts of assault or battery by a public officer and battery with serious bodily injury. Ortiz faces up to four years in prison if convicted.[4]
