Incident Reports

2019 Death of Israel Miranda Jr

On April 6, 2019, Miranda attended a party while off-duty. Miranda's brother Israel complained that he was playing English music and demanded that it be switched to Spanish. An argument ensued, and Israel told Miranda to leave and began to countdown from 10 seconds. Israel pulled out a folding knife and swung at another of his brothers, eventually stabbing him in the hand. Miranda fired his personal handgun, striking Israel.

Deputy Gerardo Jimenez responded and handcuffed Miranda. Deputy Trevor Barkley responded and provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.

Israel died at the hospital.

Toxicology tests were not performed on Miranda.

Audio from the responding deputies was captured on their belt recorders.

Response Timeline

On April 19, 2023, the county District Attorney's Office determined that the use of force was "reasonably necessary to defend against the danger" that Israel posed and the shooting was legally justified.[2]

2019 Death of Clifton Pleasant

On July 2, 2019, Miranda and other deputies responded to a disturbance and encountered Pleasant, who was intoxicated and agitated. Deputies handcuffed Pleasant and detained him in a police vehicle. Rather than transport Pleasant to the jail, deputies dropped him at a motel. The staff at the motel called police as he was being destructive in the lobby. Deputies responded and took him to another motel.[3]

Pleasant left the motel and walked onto the freeway, where he was struck and killed by a motorist.[3]

Response Timeline

On April 2, 2020, Pleasant's family sued Miranda and other deputies for Failure to Protect, Interference with Parent/Child Relationship, State Created Danger, and other charges.[3]

The family's lawsuit was dismissed after the police claimed they had provided a "courtesy ride" to Pleasant. The family appealed, but were denied.[4][5]
