Incident Reports
2022 Death of Bryon Childers
On September 6, 2022, Bean was dispatched to a call of a person walking along a road. Bean was informed that Childers was wanted on felony warrants and had stated that he was not going back to prison. When Bean located Childers, he walked off into the woods and ignored Bean's orders to stop. Childers brandished a firearm and Bean fired.[3]
Childers died at the scene.[4]
The incident was captured by Bean's body-worn camera.[3]
Response Timeline
An investigation will be conducted by an independent agency, which is required under state law for incidents where a person dies during an encounter with a police officer. The state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) opened an investigation.
Bean was placed on paid leave pending an investigation.[3]
The county District Attorney found there was "no basis to prosecute" Bean.[5]
