2023 Death of Graham Roberson

Critical Incident Community Briefing

On June 22, 2023, police were called about a suspicious vehicle. Officers located Roberson walking in the street. Roberson "displayed" a gun, prompting Corrigan to shoot, striking Roberson.[1]

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Roberson died at the hospital.[1]

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras and in-vehicle cameras.[2]

Response Timeline

On June 22, 2023, Corrigan was placed on administrative duty.[1]

On August 24, 2023, the agency released Corrigan's name.[1]

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation opened a criminal investigation.[1]

The department's Professional Standards Division opened an internal investigation regarding policy violations.[1]

On February 26, 2024, the Guilford County District Attorney's Office determined that Roberson posed an imminent lethal threat, which allowed Corrigan to use deadly force to protect himself.[3][4]

The investigations determined that the original call to the police was placed from Roberson's residence.[3]
