2016-2019 Fraud
Between May 2016 and February 2019, Murphy and other officers in the department's evidence warehouse claimed overtime hours that they did not work. Murphy embezzled $16,000.[2][3]

Murphy was suspended without pay.[4]
On September 2, 2020, Murphy and other officers were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit theft from a program receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds. Each officer faces up to 15 years in prison.[4]
On June 1, 2021, Murphy pleaded guilty to both charges.[5][2][6]
On May 22, 2024, the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission revoked Murphy's certification following his felony conviction.[7]
