James claims that Sasek did not activate his body-worn camera while transporting James, disabled his vehicle's GPS monitor, and turned off his cell phone.[4]
Sasek admitted to leaving James at the landfill.[5]
James filed a lawsuit against the department and the officers.[6]
On January 29, 2024, the city reportedly settled the lawsuit for $3 million.[7]
On July 17, 2025, a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) advisory board recommended that Sasek be decertified.[3]
