Roberto Corchado (2023)
Overview
On March 4, 2023, Fresno California Police Department officers recognized Corchado and attempted to stop him for outstanding felony warrants. Corchado led police on a chase, which was discontinued when Corchado drove the wrong way on a highway off ramp.[1]
Officers later located Corchado using a helicopter, which tracked him through the city and directed officers to his location. Officers attempted another stop, eventually using a PIT maneuver to disable his vehicle. Officers Bryce Hammond and Luke Tran were next to arrive. Corchado fired at officers several times before he exited his vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. Hammond and Tran returned fire and chased Corchado down the street. Corchado refused orders to stop. Hammond fired, and Corchado fell to the ground.[1][2]
Officers rendered aid, including CPR. Corchado was pronounced dead at the scene.[1]
Hammond was struck by Corchado's gunfire, but his ballistic vest stopped the bullet.[1][2]
A handgun was found near Corchado's car. Corchado was unarmed when he fled his vehicle.[1]
The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[3]
On May 12, 2023, Corchado's family filed a federal lawsuit against the city, the police chief, and the two officers, claiming that excessive force violated Corchado's Fourth Amendment rights.[4]
On November 21, 2025, the California Attorney General concluded "that criminal charged were not appropriate in this case".[2]

Parts of the incident were captured on two different witness's cell phone cameras, a business's security camera, and officers' body-worn cameras.
On April 7, 2023, the department released a Critical Incident Video.[1]
Corchado's family claims that video from the helicopter is available.[5]
