Legislative Activity
2024
On March 26, 2024, the state passed Senate Bill 6009, which prohibits the hog-tying suspects. The bill was in response to the death of Manuel Ellis.
On March 4, 2024, the state legislature approved Initiative 2113, which reduced the threshold when an officer can pursue a suspect from "reasonable suspicion" that a serious crime has been committed to a reasonable suspicion that they broke "the law" or is a "threat to the safety of" others.[1]
2021
On May 18, 2021, the state passed House Bill 1054, which banned the use of neck restraints (chokeholds).
On May 18, 2021, the state passed House Bill 1267, which requires a state investigation into police use of force and other incidents.
